They produce some heat, but not much. Gas logs sit inside an open, unsealed fireplace, so most of the warmth goes straight up the chimney. They’re designed for ambiance—the look and feel of a fire—not for heating your home. If you need real heat, a gas insert is a much better investment.

Gas logs work in rentals, but they have some risks. Because the fireplace stays open, guests can throw objects into the fire—which can damage the logs and create a safety hazard. A gas insert, by contrast, has a sealed glass front that prevents tampering entirely. For most rental owners, the insert is the safer, lower-maintenance option.

Gas log sets are typically less expensive upfront—often $1,000 to $3,000 installed. A gas insert runs more, usually $3,000 to $8,000 including installation. But gas logs don’t seal your fireplace, which means ongoing drafts, heat loss, and chimney maintenance. Over time, the insert usually pays for the difference in energy savings and lower maintenance costs.

Gas logs can be installed in most open masonry fireplaces as long as the chimney is functional and the damper can be locked open (since gas logs require an open flue). We’ll inspect your fireplace during the in-home visit to make sure everything is safe and up to code. If your chimney doesn’t pass inspection, we’ll talk you through the repair or recommend an alternative.
